These days a view like this is not very special, although it will be again very soon. There was a time when a view of the Space Shuttle in flight was very rare. The first opportunity to photograph the orbiting Shuttle from a separate spacecraft was on STS-7, which provided a stunning series of pictures. This view was made by an IMAX-camera on the free-flying ORFEUS/SPAS during STS-51. Ed Hengeveld |

It's always special, even though I no longer follow space missions as I used to.And it's even more special because we're trading this bird for a capsule... |

Beautiful image Ed. The richness of the blue Earth in the background providing Discovery with a magnificent setting - she has always been my favourite orbiter.I also remember the time when images such as this were such a revelation to me as a young boy. Happy memories, indeed. How they contrast with comparable sentiments today. |

There is a great scene where this is being filmed in the documentary Space Shuttle Discovery. |
