In March 1978 four two-man crews were named to fly the Space Shuttle during the first four orbital flight tests (OFT) then scheduled to begin in 1979. Pictured during their press conference, right to left, are astronauts Young-Crippen (OFT-1), Engle-Truly (OFT-2), Haise-Lousma (OFT-3) and Brand-Fullerton (OFT-4).

The only thing wrong with that photo is that awful worm logo!

I really enjoy these photos each week Ed, thank you.

Anyone know the reason for the breakup of the Brand/Fullerton crew after Haise's departure? Why wasn't the new crew Lousma and Overmyer?

That's just one great photo - if anything, it proves that a Haise-Lousma STS-3 really did exist at one time (along with Hoot Gibson's CV, available online, which mentions that he did work in preparation for the mission.)

Gordon Fullerton: "I think your overall presentation was weak, but I like your choice of music. You just need to work on your falsetto during Stairway To Heaven. As far as I'm concerned, you're going to the next round. ... Simon?"

Why wasn't Ken Mattingly in the mix for the original OFT crews, to begin with?

And why did Brand get "relegated" to STS-5, and out of the mix for OFT-4. I recall at one stage there were going to be five OFTs.
