Gemini 6 backup command pilot Gus Grissom prepares for a test of his parachute harness at KSC in September 1965. In the background is a print of the famous painting that artist Norman Rockwell made of Grissom and John Young in 1964 as they were in training for Gemini 3. The painting apparently has a few humorous captions added.

I must just tell you what has just happended here! As I opened up the message and saw the black and white image, I thought to myself -"oh it's John Young (wearing the helmet)". So imagine my disbelief when I saw Grissom's name on the spacesuit. They must have looked alike in certain respects, or am I the only one to think this?

Great photo Ed, with the print in the background. Rockwell has captured a wonderful scene, in which I had no problem identifying the two astronauts! Does anyone know/would like to guess what the humorous captions are?

In the Rockwell print it looks like Joe Schmitt on the left helping to suit up John Young. I wonder what the captions say on the print behind Gus?

Brad - I believe the other suit technician is Al Rochford.

I also would like to know what the captions say. This is a true mystery that cSPACE must solve.

I always liked that painting. Wonder where the original is?

I know it was at the Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C., at least 20 years ago. They had a space art exhibit opposite the LM on the first floor.

All times are CT (US)
