Is that the VAB under construction in the far distance, top left corner? When was this photo taken? Presumably 1963-4ish, given that the Pad immediately to the north of Pad 19 is still under construction. |

I have no ID or date for this photo, but my feeling is that it was taken in April 1964. I have some other photos showing astronauts Cooper, Armstrong and See looking over the Gemini 1 spacecraft in the white room at Pad 19. This photo appears to have been taken at the same time. |

To answer an above question, it may be the VAB at the extreme top left, but my eyes are poor. The steel framework of the VAB had started in Jan. 1964 and was structurally completed in June 1965. Another possibility would be the Titan ITL area as there were two large support facilities servicing Pads 40 and 41, however, in 1964 they were in complete operation for the Air Force Titan III boosters and payloads. You can see Pad 20, the closest nearby launch complex to Titan/Gemini's 19, with the new generation of Saturn/Apollo launch pads of 34 and 37. There is another series of Elliot See photos on the Cape-side, and on 19, in supporting his backup role as pilot of Gemini 5. In those, dated Aug. 1965, he is wearing the same "white room" clothing and attached badges (all except one). |

Great photos. I had seen the lower photo but the top one was new to me, always good to see a photo that you haven't seen before. Given the fact that so many photos were taken there must be hundreds of unseen images of astronauts just waiting to be discovered. |

Is it me, or does he look like a young Ronald Reagan? |

In my opinion, the See photo in question was taken in 1964 around the time a few of the astronauts were photographed inspecting Gemini 1 at Pad 19. I originally scanned that transparency and there was no ID accompanying it. |

If they do, it's probably in some undisclosed location deep in the woods! I saw a clip recently of the Original 7 at a press conference, and two or three of them were smoking and using ashtrays! Today they'd probably be tackled by security and hauled off somewhere in an unmarked van. Can you imagine a shuttle commander sitting there and lighting up during a press conference? "Well that's a great question. (Pauses to flick open his lighter, take a puff and blows smoke like the Marlboro Man) In the event that an extra EVA becomes necessary..."). Or smoking a stogie or a pipe during the Q&A session at the Cape following the TCDT? Claxons would sound and red lights would be flashing at NASA HQ and it would be on all the cable news channels that night! ("Why are our tax dollars being used to promote unhealthy behavior and set a poor example for our nations' youth?! yelled the pundit). A congressional hearing would soon be called! My how times have changed. |

I believe the lower photo was taken at Mission Control during the Gemini 7/6 missions. If so, See and Bassett were already assigned as the prime crew for Gemini 9. |

See and Bassett both served as Capcoms during Gemini 7/6a. They were officially named as the Gemini 9 prime crew the month before (Nov. 1965). |
