As a belated tribute to 'pad leader' Guenter Wendt, I selected four photos illustrating his work on Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle.

Guenter is seen next to Liberty Bell 7 before Gus Grissom's MR-4 flight in July 1961.

Gemini 9 command pilot Tom Stafford appears to be asking Guenter if his spacecraft is really ready for launch in June 1966. Pilot Gene Cernan is on the left, with the backup crew of Jim Lovell and Buzz Aldrin standing behind them.

Joking with Apollo 9 commander Jim McDivitt, Guenter is helping the crew egress following the countdown test in February 1969.

Guenter appears to be reassuring the STS-1 backup crew, Joe Engle and Dick Truly, that there is no danger in entering the Shuttle Enterprise, which was rolled out to the launch pad in May 1979 to check procedures and equipment.

Rest in peace, Guenter Wendt.

Ed... great tribute. Would you possibly have a photo from the Skylab program as well? Thanks!

Ed, that's wonderful. Finally some photos of Guenter I have not seen before. I knew you wanted to post one photo but four is really a surprise. Do we have to call this forum from now on Photo(s) of the week?

I know I am pushing it but do you have a photo of Guenter showing him on July 16, 1969 in the White Room with each of the three astronauts? I mean a shot where the Pad Fuehrer is clearly shown.

Thanks again for the "four" photos of the week.

Makes me smile and teary-eyed at the same time -- They broke the mold on Guenter.

I hope everyone now in the Program, and youngsters coming up to enter the business of launching people into space will take the time to read his book and his NASA Oral History interviews. In every little story there is much wisdom.

I don't have any Skylab photos with Guenter in the white room, but there are some where he is helping the crew ingress during altitude chamber tests. And there are several photos taken in the white room prior to the Apollo 11 launch. The best ones are those where Guenter is shown with Aldrin. These can also be found in the LIFE archive.

I had the privilege and honor of meeting Guenter Wendt at the Astronaut Hall of Fame in Nov. 2001. He was indeed a great man. And very humble, too. When I approached him and called out his name, he raised his arms and said "I'm not me! I'm just faking it!" That's a memory that will stay with me for ever.
