Dutch payload specialist Wubbo Ockels hitches a ride on the crawler-transporter as it moves towards the Vehicle Assembly Building to pick up the STS-61A stack (visible through the open door). This was Challenger's last successful mission and carried the Spacelab D1 laboratory as well as the largest Shuttle crew of eight astronauts.

Notice in the far left bay you can see the next stack being assembled. That was quite a busy time for NASA prior to the Challnger accident.

Ed, I just returned from a nice Hawaiian vacation to hear the sad news of Guenter Wendt's passing. I am really sad but feel good to have met this nice and humble man. I checked your latest photo posts to find no photo in Guenter's honor.

Can you post one photo of your choice. There is usually the same photos we all know in circulation but I know you can come up with one we don't know.

I really enjoy your photo of the week.

Here is one you don't know: Guenter holding a painting I did of him (photo courtesy Noah Bradley).

My Photos of the Week are selected a few weeks ahead, but I promise next week's photo will be one of Guenter.

Ed, that's a great shot of him. I am looking forward to your scheduled Guenter photo. I bet it's one of him in the white room when he was younger.

Many thanks for your service to keep the history alive.

I think that is my favorite shuttle astronaut's name--Wubbo Ockels. I think anyone who knows who he is should go into the Space Enthusiasts' Hall of Fame.
