Forty years ago this week, the crew of Apollo 11 had been released from quarantine and was beginning a hectic public relations schedule that would keep them busy until November. They began in Los Angeles, where they were received by President Richard Nixon and Vice-President Spiro Agnew.

Ed, the crews day actually began in New York City that morning where I was fortunate enough to have seen them in their first "public appearance" after the flight, in a ticker-tape parade.

This was followed by a second parade in Chicago.

The dinner with President Nixon in Los Angeles capped a very busy day.

Looks like a casting call for who would replace Sean Connery as James Bond...

After a fabulous dinner reception (and a little too many drinks) this newly formed high flying barber shop quintet decide a rendition of Fly Me Too The Moon is in order.

You are right, of course. I hadn't realized this was all on the same day.

Love him or hate him, I can't help but think what a hypocrite Nixon was---he was the one who ended the Apollo program. I guess the dinner and photo was just for his political benefit.

I know that every sitting Governor was invited to attend. But what about members of Congress?
