Forty years ago today, the first sample return container with lunar surface material from Apollo 11 arrived at Ellington Air Force Base by air from the Pacific recovery area. Posing with the rock box are (left to right): George M. Low, Manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program at the Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC); USAF Lt. Gen. Samuel C. Phillips, Apollo Program Director at the Office of Manned Space Flight, NASA HQ.; George S. Trimble, MSC Deputy Director (almost obscured); Eugene G. Edmonds, MSC Photographic Technology Laboratory; Richard S. Johnston (in back), Special Assistant to the MSC Director; Dr. Thomas O. Paine, NASA Administrator; and Dr. Robert R. Gilruth, MSC Director.

And for all they knew at the time, they could have been holding millions of moon germs! Yes I know no one believed life existed on the moon, but it will be a different story when we get to Mars.

I can't help but wonder if that container actually contained lunar material...or whether it was empty (or contained a couple of bricks) to serve as a photo op.

"Not quite sure what all the press fuss is about, the MSC staff giddily handles the NASA beer cooler on the way to Chris Kraft's back yard Mission Accomplished barbecue!"

It probably was empty. I was part of a photo op once in Australia where the local MP wanted to look like he was helping out in moving materials into our new office block. We were about to hand over a full box to him when one of his handlers said "No, no! Give him an empty one!" So we did. Silly politicians.

Anyway, Mr. Edmonds could be saying to Dr. Paine "lets crack this thing open and have a looksee!"

All times are CT (US)
