Forty years ago today, the Apollo 11 astronauts photographed this view of the earth as they were returning from the moon. Visible is the southern portion of India and the Indian Ocean.

That is a beautiful photo I don't remember seeing before. I'll use it as an excuse to give you one of my occasional thank yous for your work on the Photo of the Week feature.

I wonder if they fully grasped that this would be their last day of their spaceflight careers. I'm sure Collins did since he planned to retire.

I think before they even left for the moon, they all figured they were tagged for being John Glenn dolls if they succeeded.

I also always look in on your photos Ed, but never reply.

I have never seen this photo before, and I'd just like to say a big thank you for all of your outstanding images!

Ed, great photo, but I wonder if it was not perhaps mis-dated by NASA? On July 23, they were still 1 day -- and I-don't-know-how-many 10s of thousands of miles -- out from Earth. This looks like a post TLI (July 16) or pre-EI (July 24) image, unless they were packing a really long focal-length lens.

John, this is definitely a before-reentry photo. It is one of the last photos on magazine AS11-44, which shows undocking in lunar orbit, followed by rendezvous the next day and then post TEI views of the moon getting smaller and the earth getting bigger and bigger.
