Forty years ago this weekend, Apollo 11 lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin was training on the Lunar Landing Research Facility at Langley. This contraption allowed a tethered LM-type vehicle to practice the final 50 meters of a lunar landing while hanging from moving cables. Commander Neil Armstrong had flown the trainer in February. Looks like the flight manual has been deleted from the photo. |

Ed, are you sure he's not dancing to the "Rocket Experience"? Great shot, as always. |

This got me to wondering about how many LMPs ever flew the LLRV/LLTV "Flying Bedstead." If the idea was that the LMP should be able to take over and land the LM at any point that the CDR was unable to do so, one would think that the LMPs should have as much training in flying the LLRV/TV as possible. sci.space.history quotes a document which says that up through the end of 1969, eight astronauts had flown the LLRV/TV. The person making the post is relatively certain that these included CC Williams, Armstrong, Anders, Borman, Aldrin, and Conrad. He believes that Scott, Lovell, and Young may have also flown the vehicle before the end of 1969. What is interesting is that he is certain that Bean did NOT fly the LLTV, even though policy was that both the CDR and LMP should be capable of flying the LM. Also, Stafford, McDivitt, and Schweickart were not among those who flew the LLTV. |

I think all of the names above are correct, except Aldrin. I don't think he ever flew the LLRV/LLTV. LMPs only trained on the LLRF, except Anders and Williams. |

Maybe they were afraid the geologist would have said, "Oh, looks like I'm accelerating toward that outcropping of schist - or is that granite? No, maybe it's a plageo..." BOOM! |

Yeah, that wouldn't make for a gneiss landing. |

I believe this thread was started almost 40 years ago by Gene Cernan. During training in the lunar rover, Jack Schmitt bounced out. He happened to be near the mock-up of Fan crater. Cernan remarked, "the Schmitt hit the fan". |

Could anyone tell me where the Lunar Landing Research Facility landing module is now? Or was it reduced to 'rubble' at the end of the Apollo program? |
