Forty years ago today, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong was getting ready to fly the Lunar Landing Training Vehicle at Ellington AFB for the first time since his crash in a similar craft in May 1968. No astronaut had flown the dangerous trainer for over a year and it had been a race against time to get it ready in time for Apollo 11. Ed Hengeveld |

Someone who doesn't know the backstory might think it's a not very interesting photo of Armstrong just sitting somewhere. But to get back into that thing after having it lurch out from under him, having to use the ejector seat, and seeing it turn into a big fireball below him... great photo. I know his experience was not unique- lots of test pilots (whether or not they later became astronauts) had to "climb back into the saddle" after ejecting. I just know I'd be reluctant to be in the same ZIP code as that thing after an experience like that. I hugely enjoyed the only time I went skydiving (tether jump over Orange, Virginia), yet years later my palms get sweaty just thinking about it. Yup, there they go. Steve |
