Forty years ago today, the Apollo 10 crew was in the middle of postflight debriefing sessions. They are shown here together with the Apollo 11 crew. Clockwise, from left foreground are Mike Collins, Apollo 11 command module pilot; Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 lunar module pilot; Gene Cernan, Apollo 10 lunar module pilot; Tom Stafford, Apollo 10 commander; Neil Armstrong, Apollo 11 commander; and John Young, Apollo 10 command module pilot.

That was my first thought when I saw the photo, too! A real sign of the changing times.

There's a move underway now in the US to give any movie that shows people smoking an 'R' rating, no one under 16 admitted without a parent. Maybe that's one way to spur interest in the Apollo program - "Sorry, kids, you can't watch those Mission Control scenes because of adult material!" The kids will then do anything they can to sneak in and watch the forbidden films.

And on the opposite side of the coin, the Apollo 10 "Son of a *bleep*" is so tame a phrase nowadays that you can hear it on prime time TV.

It's interesting to consider that among the men at that table, the least experienced astronaut among them (with regards to actual time in spaceflight) was Neil Armstrong.

Six pretty much regular looking guys. Don't ever judge a person by how they look!

Six American astronauts, 3 selected in 1962, 3 selected in 1963. Five test pilots, one operational pilot (Cernan). Three Air Force pilots, three Navy aviators.

The only one who Deke Slayton never assigned in any position except crew commander (prime or backup): Armstrong.

How staged do you think this photo is? Do you think this is how they really did the postflight debriefing?

I have no idea.

It's interesting where they sat. The three Group 2 guys are next to each other and the three Group 3 guys are next to each other.

I find it interesting the contrast of clothes -- Stafford all business in his suit, and Armstrong all casual in a short sleeved shirt. Plus the other mentioned observations above -- a very unique and interesting image. Thanks for sharing it, Ed. Great choice.

Actually, I would rate his (and Dave Scott's) recovery of the near fatal Gemini 8, as putting him ahead of the others, as far as proven ability under the most extreme circumstances.

No, I believe that's a pen he's holding like a cigar. If you enlarge the photo, you can see the ends are black tipped and very square.
