Forty years ago today, Apollo 9 was scheduled to be launched. But one day earlier the flight had been delayed for three days to give the crew a chance to recover from a “mild viral respiratory illness”, or cold. So the astronauts had some extra time to get a haircut. Barbers Matt Jude (foreground) and Chuck Quadrozzi give Dave Scott and Jim McDivitt a close cropping. Rusty Schweickart is not shown.

Great picture! I was there that day (or the day before) and saw the Saturn V on the pad. I was a little kid but I'll never forget it!

You can see the reflection of someone in the third chair. Doesn’t look like Rusty.

Could it be Worden? He was on the support crew.

Was this at the NASA MFGCF (Manned Follicle Growth Curtailment Facility), or did they go to a local barber shop?

Looks like there's a fourth chair as well (being done by the guy in blue), and if Ed could get a better scan of his (already reflected) reflection just to the left of Scott's head we might be able to see who it is.

JL just emailed me a hi-res version of this shot, and if I HAD to put astronaut names to the heads in the mirror I'd go for Ed Mitchell next to McDivitt then Cunningham at the end. But I assume it wasn't an astronauts-only barbers, so it could have been anyone really!

P.S. What's next week's guessing game Ed?
