Forty years ago this week, the Apollo 9 crew practiced emergency egress procedures at Launch Complex 39A. With pad leader Guenter Wendt watching at left, Jim McDivitt and Rusty Schweickart have just climbed out of the spacecraft and attach an emergency oxygen pack before making their way down the launch tower to a waiting M-113. Dave Scott is out of frame. Ed Hengeveld |

Very interesting pic. I like how you are following the time lines from 40 years ago. It makes me at least, who was not alive at the time, see the excitement of the day!Interesting question, though. When the astronauts connected from the s/c to the emergency air packs, how much residual air was in the suit so they could breathe during the switch? |

I believe the switch never took more than a few seconds, so there was no problem.Ed |

Whenever I see Guenter Wendt's name, I always hear Tom Hanks voice in my head."Guenter Wendt...I vunder where Guenter Wendt?" as Jim Lovell in 'Apollo 13' Thanks for the pic. | |
