The Apollo 8 crew relax in the crew quarters at Cape Kennedy, one day prior to their launch to the moon and into history. They are leafing through an issue of LIFE with photos of the Apollo 7 flight. Left to right are Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and Bill Anders.

It's amazing how Frank Borman can look so intense, even just reading a magazine! You'd never guess from looking at Lovell and Anders the enormity of what they were about to undertake the next day.

And here they are, a day later, eating their steak and eggs before getting ready for liftoff. I couldn't resist buying this photo earlier this year...especially for the funny inscription Anders applied for Harold "Hal" Collins (NASA Chief of Mission Support).

Not wishing to steal Ed's fire, but it seemed a shame not to continue the theme...

And here, just a little later:

BTW, thanks Ed for another year of great shared photos.

Comparing the two photos, it looks like the astronauts are wearing the same shirts in both. This makes me think that they were both taken on the same day, probably the day before launch, and Hal Collins' free meal was not, alas, the launch day breakfast.

Borman and Lovell are both wearing different shirts (better visible on other photos). The 'free meal' was indeed the launch day breakfast...
