On March 5, 1968, the prime and backup crews for the Apollo 'E type' mission participated in a crew compartment stowage review at the Grumman plant for LM-4, which they were to fly to a high-elliptical orbit later that year. The vehicle used in the test was LM Test Article 1 (LTA-1), configured to resemble the LM-4 flight vehicle. Posing with LTA-1 are backup commander Neil Armstrong and backup LMP Buzz Aldrin. Plans for the flight changed during 1968 and it was eventually flown as Apollo 8.

Interesting photo. Note the round hatch in the LM, which must have been leftover from the earlier configuration of the test article.

That LM (with the round hatch) is on display at the Cradle of Avaition Museum.

What's with the gigantic bump on Buzz's head? Must be why they switched from the round portal! Looks like an elbow growing out of it!

I recall seeing small models with the round hatch, but no mock-ups. The full LM that they have, with astronaut at the base, has a square hatch. Where was the full round hatch, it would be interesting to see. [We usually get there during the holiday time (in-laws live near by)].

I haven't been there for a while. You may have to hunt around for it. Ask Josh Stoff he's one of the curators there.

You can see pictures of LTA-1 at the Cradle of Aviation at A Field Guide to American Spacecraft.

Thanks Robert, I had failed to notice the round hatch. I know precisely where it is in the museum.

The Apogee books publication "Virtual LM" has loads of images of this craft included on it's accompanying CD-ROM (Ascent and Descent stages).
