Joan C. Barrett Roosa, widow of Apollo-14 astronaut Stuart A. Roosa, passed away on Tuesday, October 30. This photo shows Mrs. Roosa with her four children as they prepare to watch the Apollo-14 launch at the Kennedy Space Center on January 31, 1971.

Thanks, Ed - a very timely posting.

If you want to see what one of those sons looks like today, there was a photo I took last year posted on this thread.

In all fairness, the suggestion to post it was made by J.L. Pickering.

It is hard for me to understand how someone can sit there looking relaxed, while her loved-one is about to ride a monster-rocket into space and then will fly to the moon...

Words fail to describe the courage of these women.

That's no lie. Which astronaut stated that the wives job was tougher than theirs?

Great photo, Ed. Thanks for sharing.

How can she look calm and smiling? Easy, her kids are there. If she looks relaxed, they will relax. But still, she looks "very relaxed" in this picture.

One of the rare Apollo astro couples with a marriage strong enough to survive the test of service and time. God bless them both.

What a great photo! With all that red, there's no doubt they're Roosa's family!
Can anyone identify or comment on the others seen in the photo? There's a little girl to the far right. Relatives of Shepard or Mitchell perhaps?

Rob--The young girl in the picture is Rosemary, Roosa's only daughter, was 7 at the time her dad went to the moon. The oldest boy is Christopher, 11 at the time, John just turned 10, and Stuart, 8. Mrs. Roosa with her daughter, at times, was a frequent visitor to Florida's Space Coast in celebration of the Apollo astronauts and their accomplishments.

Thanks Ken! But I was referring to the people behind the Roosa family in the enclosure. Anyone know who they are?

Sorry Rob for not addressing your question correctly. After seeing the other people behind the Roosa family, yes, I do see a little girl along with a few others--however--I can't seem to recognize anyone inparticular. For the Apollo 14 launch, the Roosa family saw the liftoff from a special astronaut viewing site that was north-west of the VAB. Let me try to assemble some other photos from the Roosa site and perhaps we can get some better pics to examine. Once again my apologies.

Francis, thanks for the photos you took at the Shepard Launching. The picture is of Christopher (Chris) whose is a Marine Officer. He looks so much like his Dad that it brought back my memories of Stu. Jack and Alan are just as nice as Chris and Rosemary is very charming. A very loving, wholesome family. Joan and Stu can be very proud! My Mom used to baby-sit for them when they came for any of launchings. I have been gathering pictures of that time to send to Joan and the family.

And thanks, to JL & Ed for sharing the lovely photo with all.

Ed,
This picture is a great example of the other important aspect of space history, too often ignored. The family and the support given to the "guys".
A touching photograph....

Ed, I was thinking exactly the same thing; she looks like shes out for a picnic with the kids instead of getting ready to watch her husband get blasted into space on top of a giant rocket.

Does anybody know what Mrs. Roosa is holding there with the Apollo 14 patch design on it? It appears to be some sort of box (or hand bag, perhaps). Is it something that other crew's families had made too? Or is she holding something unique?
