Apollo Chief of Landing and Recovery, Jerome "Jerry" Hammack passed away on August 20, 2007. He is seen here with Apollo-8 astronaut Bill Anders during recovery training aboard the NASA Motor Vessel Retriever in the Gulf of Mexico in October 1968. Hammack also served as the head of the Research and Development Test Coordination Office for the Mercury Program, deputy manager of Vehicles and Missions for the Gemini Program, chief of NASA's Future Programs Division, and chief of the Space Shuttle Program's Safety Division through the loss of Challenger.
