As a sequel to last week’s photo, here is a cockpit scene showing the 747 pilots who flew the Challenger from California to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida in July 1982. Left to right are Joe Algranti, Dick Scobee and Louis “Skip” Guidry.

I suppose the irony of this photo is obvious. That's another great photo, Ed.

Wow, I didn't know Scobee was rated to fly the 747.

Very cool pic!
Do astronauts always fly the 747 when carrying the shuttle?

I know of only two astronauts flying the 747: Scobee and Fullerton. Don't know if there were more...

When the Enterprise visited the UK back in the 80s, i'm sure Scobee and Paul Weitz were on board at Stanstead. Not sure who P1 on the 747 was though.

Actually Dick Scobee, while a test pilot, flew a version of Air Force One (the 747 version) to test and work out, aerial refueling for it. He did it with Boeing test pilot Ray McPherson.

You may see Ray pop up somewhere in a couple of months.

Fitzhugh Fulton and Joe Algranti were the pilots when Enterprise visited Stansted on June 5th 1983. Scobee and Weitz were indeed on board and also a NASA official Hans Mark. Got there just in time to see it land. I got to talk to Paul Weitz a few years ago but he didn't remember the visit although he was indeed there. Can appreciate that he travels around a lot and the Enterprise visited the Paris airshow, Germany and I believe Canada before returning home.

You would think if you had a type rating in the shuttle you should be able to fly anything!

(Yeah, I know it's not that simple by the FAA, but you know what I mean)

actually- Dick also tested some version of the C-5A Galaxy transport, or was that what he flew before his selection?
