MA-9 pilot Gordon Cooper points to the National Geographic logo on a globe, during a photo session for his official portrait for the mission. This can be considered as one of the first gag-portraits of the space age. Although the photographer is not identified, the fact that Cooper is pointing to the logo leads me to believe that the photo was made by NGS-photographer Dean Conger, who was working on loan to NASA at the time.

OK, we can imagine what Gordo is saying in this photo:

"This is where I will land. Be sure to have my steak and eggs ready for lunch."

Is he pointing to the logo or to Florida, which is closer to his fingers?

Thanks Robert, there goes my theory
It is indeed more likely that he is pointing to Cape Canaveral...

Cooper definitely had the most interesting portraits made for his Mercury mission, with everything from posing in front of stark blue or yellow backgrounds to those famous shots where he is surrounded by a "fog."

He kinda creeps me out in this photo in a Gary Busey sort of way.

He might be even pointing at his planned orbital injection location 300 seconds after
launch..........Gary Busey did well as Buddy Holly at least.
