Apollo-17 commander Gene Cernan relaxes onboard the LM Challenger on the lunar surface, after the final of three EVA’s at the Taurus-Littrow landing site in December 1972. This is a composite of two photos, made by LMP Jack Schmitt, showing the cramped LM cabin with the doffed spacesuits of the two men at left.

Great image Ed, and a great piece of PS work by the look of it.

I recently completed a composite of Apollo 17 images myself. This is made from 3 of the onboard images recently added to Kipps site.

Ed- What a terrific shot. Thanks for sharing.

Maybe someone here can confirm...If memory serves correct, werent the LM's different systems and malfunctions binders stored in those 2 white pouches above his right shoulder?

You could be right Jay, but I thought they were for Lunar samples.

FutureAstronaut- From what I understand, lunar samples were stored in protective cases, etc. Plus, I think it would be pretty odd to store lunar samples so high up and flat against the LM side wall. Those pouches dont look as though they can store very much mass at all.

Thanks for sharing this. The image of Cernan is one of my favorite images from Apollo; something about it gives a "you are there" kind of feel.

By the way, I'm a long time reader of CS but this is my first post. The information I've gathered on this site about space and space collectables is invaluable. Thanks to all who contribute.

The two pouches held the flight data files, many pages of which have been currently on sale.

I never knew the A17 crew shot that much onboard pictures.
It s a bit strange that I never found one in a book.
BTW i read in a post Cernan got somekind of oral infection during the returnflight does anybody know how that came to be?
It seems he had that problem more then once because i saw on other pictures Cernan training for A17 he had also red spots on his face.

Mark,

I checked the date of Cernan's (1st !) copter crash (Jan 21, 1971)to be sure the facial marks weren't caused by that and there is about 18 months between the crash and the Apollo pics I have seen with Cernan having marks on his face (Aug 4, 1972).

I'm guessing Cernan suffered with cold sores or something like that. These guys were also wearing sweaty oxygen masks quite an bit so I don't suppose he was the first astro to suffer skin complaints.

Just my 2p.....
