Apollo-15 astronauts Dave Scott and Jim Irwin walk to their car following a training exercise in the KSC mission simulator, three days before launch in July 1971.

Ah yes, the days when Fords looked like Fords, and Chevies looked like Chevies.

Now they all look like jellybeans.

There is something about pictures like this that i find......... spine tingling! It's the thought that, here are a couple of guys just strolling to there cars in a carpark, normal blokes, normal situation. But in their mind, they know they are going to soon be walking on the Moon! There is something about the unreal contrast of where they are against where they will be, or have been. Any more pics like this of astros in "every day context" would be much appreciated.
Thanks Ed

I assume that the blue car that Dave is approaching was his. The 15 crew went patriotic with their cars; Dave had blue, Irwin red, and Wordon white (from Jim Irwin's "To Rule the Night" page 217).

Ed...that photo brings back a lot of memories.
I was 15 years old, at KSC for the Apollo 15 launch when this (or a very similar) photo appeared in FLORIDA TODAY, just days before lift-off.
Thanks!

But Dave is wearing the same yellow shirt in each pic, at least!

I think the car Dave is walking by in the first picture is a 1971 Impala. Not much of an astronauts car like the corvette in the bottom picture.

Paul Weitz told me once about a takeoff crew pose they did - I THINK it wqas a Skylab one, but it may have been STS 6.

As a take off on the old Corvette crew pics, they towed in from a junkyard the worst cars imaginable anbd posed with them.

If anyone has a copy of that Id love a copy.
