Twenty-five years ago this month I was at the Kennedy Space Center to cover the launch of STS-1. It was an experience I will never forget. Two days after launch I also saw the landing at the Dryden Flight Research Center. To commemorate the flight I will post a daily photo, giving a day-by-day account of some of the things I saw during that exciting week.Astronaut John Young, commander for STS-1, sits in the cockpit of his T-38 jet on the tarmac at Patrick Air Force Base after arriving from Houston on the afternoon of April 8, 1981, two days before Columbia's scheduled liftoff. George Abbey, Director of Flight Operations at the Johnson Space Center, flew backseat with Young, while Bob Crippen flew a separate T-38. Ed Hengeveld |

Ah, yes, the mysterious George Abbey, whom nobody has seemed to photograph! | |
