Astronauts (left to right) Tom Stafford, Jim Lovell (behind Stafford), Deke Slayton, Gene Cernan and Buzz Aldrin watch the successful launch of the Surveyor-1 spacecraft by an Atlas-Centaur launch vehicle on May 30, 1966. Stafford and Cernan were prime crew for Gemini-9 and Lovell and Aldrin were their backups. They were preparing to be launched the following day, but that attempt was scrubbed and launch was postponed until June 3, 1966. Surveyor-1 made a soft landing on the moon on June 2. Ed Hengeveld |

Hey, if I magnify the photo, I thnk I see the smoke from the Surveyor launch reflected in the sunglasses worn by Cernan and Aldrin. Now that's pretty cool...Four guys who would get to the moon and their boss. A great photo. |
