Mercury-Redstone 1 was the embarrasing “tower flight” on November 21, 1960, in which a premature engine shutdown of the Redstone booster triggered ignition of the escape tower. The tower landed 400 meters from the launch pad, where it drilled a hole in the ground. The Mercury spacecraft was launched successfully on MR-1A one month later.
