STS-1 commander John Young is handed his helmet, as pilot Bob Crippen looks on. The pair are suiting up for Columbia’s first launch attempt on April 10, 1981. Several hours later the launch was scrubbed, to the disappointment of many thousands of Shuttle watchers at KSC (including myself). Two days later our disappointment had vanished!

One thing I think is evident from the expressions, these guys are well aware of the possible consequences of what they are about to attempt. Just look at Bob's eyes.

Although I agree with what you say, you should see the other photos in this series: smiling from ear to ear!

I believe these suits were adapted from Air Force suits that SR-71 pilots wore.

Affirm. The pressure suits that the astronauts of the first four shuttle flights wore, were a modified version of the SR-71 high altitude pressure suit.

To read more on the suits click here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_Crew_Escape_System_Pressure_Suit
