The STS-8 crew walks out of the O&C Building at the Kennedy Space Center in a tremendous thunderstorm, forcing the assembled press (myself included) to run for cover. I was soaking wet after taking the picture at left. The other picture shows the situation at the launch pad, where Challenger was waiting. Despite a short hold, STS-8 was launched successfully that night. A night I will never forget.

As it was in the middle of a thunderstorm did it not mean the crew was soaked?

I didn't think they launched during electrical storms.

The launch was delayed 17 minutes to let the storms pass.

If you are specifically referring to the STS-8 crew getting soaked at the time of the walkout, I remember video coverage showing that the crew transfer van was moved into position as close to the ramp as possible.
