Eight members of the (brand)new nine! Barely two weeks after having been selected as astronauts, NASA's group 2 watch the launch of Wally Schirra aboard Sigma 7 on October 3, 1962. Left to right are Neil Armstrong, Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, Tom Stafford, Pete Conrad, Ed White and Jim McDivitt. Kneeling is John Young. Elliot See is not in the picture.

I wonder what was going through their minds...

Three moonwalkers, 1st flight around the moon, 1st American space walk, Apollo 13, Apollo-Soyuz & 1st shuttle flight. Quite an illustrious group. Ed thanks for another great photo.

Ed,

Is it just me, or does Pete Conrad look to have his fingers crossed ?

It looks like they are standing by the wooden observation platform\grandstand by the Mercury mission control center.I`ve stood there trying to imagine these guys watching a launch.
Thanks for bringing the thought to life!

One could easily argue this was the greatest of all astronaut groups. In fact, it would be hard to argue there was a group that was better. Only the Original 7 come somewhat close...for sheer bravery, if for no other reason.

Just about everything I've read says the second nine was the cream of the crop. Quite a compliment as the Mercury 7 and later groups were pretty darn good.

They must be the best group, cause if you look you can see they managed to reasonably match their shoes

Note that Young and Lovell are the only ones not wearing sunglasses or shading their eyes. Not sure what this says about Borman and McDivitt, except maybe they forgot their sunglassess and aren't real men like Young and Lovell.

Note also that the photographer committed the cardinal sin of having his shadow intruding into the shot.

For this reason, Wally Schirra has on a number of occasions said that this is one of his favorite photos...
