On February 21, 1961, astronauts Grissom, Glenn and Shepard (left to right) were selected by the Space Task Group to begin special training for the first manned Mercury Redstone flight (MR-3). Although Project Mercury Director Robert Gilruth told the astronauts as early as January 19 that Shepard would be the prime pilot, that decision was not announced until May 2, after the MR-3 launch was scrubbed. Shepard became the first American in space on May 5, 1961. Ed Hengeveld |

Just so sad to think only Glenn is still alive. A truly great group. Gus would have made an awesome first man on the moon. |

Ed, is that the date for this photo (Feb. 21, 1961)? Or is it earlier or later then that? |

Lou, I don't think that photo has a date, other than 1961. I will check. |

I just wonder, was there a difference in helmet size? I know pilot helmets come in different sizes... |

Looks to me that they were not all photographed together. They look like they were taken from several different angles and matched up in the dark room (in the days before Photoshop).I can't imagine why a photographer would have them line up so tightly like that. |
