April 1991: STS-39 astronaut Lacy Veach, who was also a pilot with the Texas Air National Guard, flies a General Dynamics F-16 over Launch Complex 39. STS-39/Discovery is on Pad-A, while STS-37/Atlantis occupies Pad B in the background.

This photo reminds me of a scene exactly 10 years before. In April 1981 I was at KSC to see the launch of STS-1. A few days before launch I arrived at the Press Site and saw the Navy's Blue Angels flying over Launch Complex 39. Unfortunately they were just leaving and I was too late to snap a photo.

Lacy was a great guy. We met in 1989 and he was kind enough to invite my family and I to his pre-launch party and launch for STS-52. He was also a former member of the Thunderbirds.

Sadly he died a week after my Dad did in 1995.

PS Great shot Ed!
Tim

That is a fantastic photo. It would make a great poster.

Great shot. You can see the crawler leaving the pad. I think he is the only Thunderbird to become an Astronuat.

Gareth, have you ever heard of International Rescue? Seriously, the Thunderbirds are the US Air Force aerobatics team (what the Blue Angels are for the US Navy and the Red Arrows for the RAF).
