Ever wondered what I looks like when you are in the CDR-seat on the Space Shuttle? This view was taken from that position one day before the launch of STS-2 and shows the view Joe Engle had during launch on November 12, 1981.

Isn't that something!

No doubt about it... the shuttle does have windows! Big ones, and plenty of them, I hope they keep that in mind when they build the next generation spacecraft.

Thanks for sharing Ed.

Excellent Photo.

It reminds me of the movie Airplane where the attendant is cleaning the windows of the aircraft, the pilot then rolls the window down and hands him his credit card.

I forgot to add an amusing story to the photo: Florida's Today newspaper reported on November 1, 1981, that a technician working inside the cockpit of Columbia was startled by the roar of a Titan-3C liftoff from nearby Launch Complex 40. He heard an ominous rumble and felt Columbia shake, so he thought he was riding an errant spaceship into orbit. Heart throbbing, pulse racing, he dove for the hatch and then he saw the cause of the noise - an Air Force rocket launching a spy satellite!

I'd like to see some video (clear video) taken from that angle. I have seen videos from inside but they never quite show the view that want.

They shot an in-cabin video on STS-1. You can see it for a couple of seconds in this footage.

But I have not seen the full version. I assume it was pointed out the hatch window by a fixed camera but I'm not sure. Has anyone seen the full version?

That is a really cool photo, I have never seen that one before. Do you by any chance have a high resolution copy?

Richie, contact me directly if you want a hi-res version of the photo.

Ed

P.S. I remember the film from that angle on STS-1, showing the "twang" on engine ignition.

STS-3 also filmed the ascent from that angle, all the way up until the sky started turning black. It is in the post-flight press conference film. No doubt it will be in Mark's STS-1 through 4 DVD set...

There is still quite a bit of red paint on the pad. Did they remove it at some point in time or did they just let it flake off?

All times are CT (US)
