Because of the hidden treasures in my photo collection, I thought it would be nice to start a series of images that are (in my view) special or seldom seen.

Here is a shot of X-15 pilot Joe Walker, sitting behind CapCom Al Shepard in Mercury Control during Gus Grissom's 'Liberty Bell 7' flight on July 21, 1961. I wonder what he was thinking...

Great idea, Ed. Thanks for the picture. Looking forward to the next installment in the series.

Here's a quick second one, to get the series going...

"To be or not to be...an astronaut"; Deke Slayton striking a classic Hamlet-pose during a Mercury suit-fitting session.

Great photos, Ed. I especially liked the one of Joe Walker, because I always assumed (erroneously, no doubt) that, post X-15, the astronauts and the X-15 pilots led separate lives!!

I believe Gus Grissom was well acquainted with Joe Walker - just don't recall why I have that impression. Perhaps my impression is something I read in "The Right Stuff." I have seen a photo or two of Grissom with Milt Thompson. Also, Grissom and Schirra did some research work on the X-20 program AFTER they were selected as Mercury astronauts.

The photos of Grissom with Thompson probably date to 1962, when Grissom flew some Paraglider tests for Gemini at Edwards.
