In the spirit of team building and friendly rivalry, employees of North American Rockwell's Space Division challenged the Apollo astronauts to an afternoon baseball game in sunny California. Wonder who won that "Out Of This World" matchup?

It was dated June 10 and am guessing that if that was in 1971 it was only about six weeks before the Apollo 15 mission in late July. Likely a slow pitch softball game but still seems odd that the entire prime and backup crews were scheduled to participate.

Seven additional astronauts were also listed to play along with two other people. One was a NASA employee assigned to Kennedy Space Center's astronaut training division. Terry Neal had been a student athlete and was 29 years old at the time. The other civilian was Hal Taylor, a United Technologies employee who was a LEM inertial guidance system technician.

That must have been 1970 rather than 1971. The Apollo 15 crews were at North American Rockwell for CSM systems briefings from June 8 to June 12 in 1970.

I count six additional astronauts.

Why would Joe Garino be out with them in California? Was it because the astronauts did a lot of physical training during their downtime from technical training — even on trips?

All times are CT (US)
