This weekend I bought three folders full of military documents from the estate of MSGT Donald L. Lockhart at the Tulsa, Oklahoma flea Market. He was in the Air Force and a crewmember on the ARIA aircraft from 1965 to 1985. NASA and the Department of Defense contracted with the McDonnell Douglas and the Bendix Corporations to modify eight Boeing C-135 Stratolifter cargo aircraft into Apollo/Range Instrumentation Aircraft (ARIA). Some of that work was done here in Tulsa. The aircraft were equipped with a steerable seven-foot antenna dish in its distinctive "Droop Snoot" or "Snoopy Nose." Among the papers are a number of copies of "Request and Authorization for Temporary Duty - Military". These list the operations his crew was assigned to. For example there is "To provide mission support of Job Order 40000-Apollo XVI." But the only other request that identifies the mission in simple terms is "Project 7450 Pioneer Venus." The others are only identified by Job Order number, Test number, or Operation number, etc. His missions were in the Atlantic, Pacific, Alaska, at Cape Canaveral and Edwards AFB. Is there a list of what missions these various Job Order, Test number, or Operation numbers, etc. correspond to? |

There is no overarching list of these items.Op or Test numbers were assigned by the range that the ARIA is supporting. Job Order is likely an accounting designation used by the ARIA group. The mission designation and op numbers correlation could be classified depending on the mission. That was one of the reasons for use of op numbers. |

I was afraid of that. I will try to match the dates of his flights with known space events and see if I can figure it out that way. | |
