Can anyone tell me how many people were awarded the Johnson Space Center "Superior Achievement Award" in 1970 for helping to secure the safe return of Apollo 13?

I understand the three members of the Apollo 14 back-up crew (Cernan, Evans and Engle) were all recipients, but others must also have received it. Is there a list anywhere? Was there a single citation that applied to every recipient, or did each recipient receive an individual citation?

The obvious source of an answer would be JSC, but they tell me they have not retained such details that far back.

I am not aware of a list of all of the 1970 recipients, but based on the below (source: Farthest Reaches), it would appear to have been individually awarded.

In addition to Neil Hutchinson, a quick Google search returns several other 1970 awardees, including: Charles Deiterich, Charles Dumis, Anthony England, Edward Fendell, Cline Frasier, Jack Knight and William Stoval.

Interesting. Thanks, Robert. That's at least a partial answer, but it is odd that JSC did not keep details of its own award.

This may possibly be to do with the loss of documents due to flooding. I recently learned that all JSC records relating to astronaut selection between "1959-1978" were destroyed by floods, a serious loss to history. I wonder if copies of those records were kept elsewhere.

It's not that unusual — the records of the old LRD abolished in 1972 were either destroyed or lost. All that remain are the personal memories and records kept by individuals who worked with the Division.

All times are CT (US)
