Larry McGlynn and Jim Oberg shared concerning word that Apollo flight controller (and cS community member) Sy Liebergot has been hospitalized. From Sy's wife, Craig (via Jim Oberg): On Aug. 29, Sy was admitted to the ICU with pancreatitis and sepsis. Once the last infection was under control, the surgeon removed his gallbladder. He was discharged home after 10 days. However, on Wednesday he awakened in excruciating abdominal pain. I took him to the ER and he was admitted to ICU. He was septic with a necrotic pancreas. He is on high powerful IV antibiotics and a feeding tube is currently being inserted so he can get nutrients. This is a day by day process and has been a bit like a roller coaster. Currently, they are trying to get his temperature down as it is quite high. Prayers please. |

I join in wishing Sy a full recovery but this is a serious disease. A "necrotic pancreas" means his tissue is dying. This will be a difficult challenge to overcome. Lynn spent three weeks in the hospital in 2015 with acute pancreatitis. It masked her Gastroparesis which wasn't diagnosed until after her pancreatitis was successfully treated. Sy's condition described by his family is more serious and extremely painful. He is in my prayers. |

A mutual friend visited Sy in the hospital about a week ago and shared then that Sy expected to be there for at least another week as he continued to recover. |

An update from Sy's wife Craig, via the Space Hipsters group on Facebook: Sy has been admitted to the Texas Medical Center. He has had 4 transfusions of blood because he has what is believed to be an ulcer bleeder and GI has been unable to stop it. Hopefully endoscopic surgery will be able to stop the bleeding and allow them to drain a pancreatic cyst that has been giving him trouble. He was in rehab after a bout with pancreatitis among other things. Update: Sy came through both procedures with flying colors. They were able to drain the cyst and take care of the bleeding. |
