Does anyone know specifically which Air Force organization Deke Slayton was working for when picked for the Mercury astronaut evaluations? I can't seem to find my copy of "Deke!"
I know he was test piloting out at Edwards, but not the details of what he was doing and for whom. Google results aren't specific enough for me to answer a question I got about it here at work.

I think I've got it. The Edwards history from the first half of 1959 shows him assigned as a "project pilot" for the F-105B until at least the end of March 1959. He's part of the AFFTC Directorate of Flight Test.

Yes, he was at Edwards in flight test but anticipating a PCS — he hoped to Eglin, though Mercury intervened.
