Former cosmonaut Viktor Gorbatko died on May 17, 2017, reports Roscosmos. He flew on the Soyuz 7, Soyuz 24 and Soyuz 37 missions. May 17, 2017, at the 83rd year of his life, died twice Hero of the Soviet Union cosmonaut Viktor Vasilievich Gorbatko.The farewell ceremony for the cosmonaut and burial is planned on May 19 at the Memorial Cemetery in Mytischi. Roscosmos expresses deep condolences to the relatives and friends of Viktor Vasilyevich. |

Sad to see this. He was a member of the 20-strong first Soviet cosmonaut team, and with his passing only three are still with us - Alexei Leonov, Valery Bykovsky and Boris Volynov. With the loss of all the Mercury astronauts, I'm afraid we are approaching the end of an era in human space exploration. Farewell, Viktor Gorbatko. |

I met him at my first Autographica some years back, when I accompanied Al Worden. What a super neat guy. He only had a few worn out Sharpies, so I gave him a box each of black and blue. His eyes lit up, and he was so excited and thankful for what to me, what just a small gesture.He was also involved in the Soviet version of our MOL program. RIP, a true giant. |

A great but unassuming cosmonaut. Had the pleasure of meeting him several times in Star City, ASE events and lunch with him and a few friends after an Autographica in London, many years ago. Glad he led a full life and highly successful space career. |

I had the pleasure of meeting Gen. Gorbatko in 1997 and again in 1998. A real gentleman he will be missed. |
