I came across this 1959 Navy documentary on their Test Pilot School.

I was pleasantly surprised to spot James Lovell, at 1:49 upper right and again at 2:17, and then Wally Schirra upper right at 11:11 and unmistakably at 12:19, including Jo in a bright blue dress.

As I understand it, Pete Conrad was in the same class but I could not unambiguously identify him in any of the classroom scenes.

It is my understanding that Lovell was number one in his class - I could not get a good look but that must be him and Marilyn receiving the top student trophy?

Yes, according to Wally Schirra, Lovell came first in their class and he and Pete Conrad tied for second.

Boy, that does not look like Jim or Marilyn Lovell to me.

To be honest my initial thought was also that as the top of the class it probably should be James Lovell receiving that special trophy but I agree with Rusty that that couple doesn't look like him and Marilyn. I'll ask him two weeks from now at the Space Lectures event.

Thanks for posting that nice Navy filmstrip. Ah, the good old days of slide rule calculus and smoking in the classroom.

All times are CT (US)
