I was reading a book on the selection of the New Nine (forgive me, I don't remember the title) with some interesting material.I read that there was one Air Force officer who still considered military rank in force during the selection process, was older than the other candidates, outranked them and considered himself a shoo-in. Frank Borman fit all of these. So, was Frank Borman a shoo-in? Were any of the Nine? In my opinion and from everything I've read Lovell, Conrad and Armstrong would have been nearly automatic, but, without violating privacy, would any of the others? Going one step beyond, were there any candidates from Group 3 that had slam-dunk acceptance? |

I got the feeling that Collins was reasonably confident during third group selection, after having come close to being selected to the second group. |

Maybe, as Collins felt he had gained more flight experience and other qualifications. And, of course, he had gone through the selection process previously. But he was also aware that the selection was now open to pilots other than those with flight test qualifications. There was a bigger pool of pilots looking for a slot. | |
