Astronaut Joe Engle celebrates his 80th birthday today. Gen. Engle first flew into space in 1965 piloting the X-15 aircraft. He was then selected as an astronaut in 1966 and commanded shuttle flights STS-2 in 1981 and STS-51-I in 1985.Happy birthday Gen. Engle may you have many more! |

Best damn pilot of hypersonic falling bricks you ever saw! As someone who was willing to take bad assignments (e.g., 2TV-1) and suffer disappointments (losing his slot on Apollo 17) to do whatever was needed for The Program, he was and continues to be a very Classy Guy. |

Happy Birthday Gen. Engle. You made a 16 year old space nut very happy in 1982 when you sent me a signed photo after your STS-2 mission. A 30 years on belated thank you. The photo still takes pride of place in my collection. |

Best wishes to the General on his 80th birthday. Living only 30 miles from Gen. Engle's hometown of Chapman, KS, I have had the pleasure of meeting him on two occasions at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center. He is a great individual and a great hero, not only for the State of Kansas, but also as an American. While I wish he would haved gotten to walk on the moon on Apollo 17, I have never heard him complain of his bump from that crew. It was fun the last time I saw him with Harrison Schmitt in Hutchinson and how they had fun joking back and forth about that mission. Thanks Gen. Engle for al you do for the space program. I love his white scarf story... |
