My word that is a big big shock. Terribly sad news. Can remember the STS-83 and 94 missions vividly. She was so incredibly gracious answering my question and signing my pic when I wrote to her. Again incredibly sad news. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

Shortly after I moved my family to Florida from Connecticut in 1991, Janice appeared at the Alcott Mountain Science Center. I used to take my daughter there to meet astronauts and we enjoyed the experiences very much. When I wrote Janice about just missing her, she responded with a warm note of encouragement for my daughter.

I finally had an opportunity to meet her in 2006 at the launch of STS-121. She was a kind and gracious lady and my prayers go out to her family and friends.

Godspeed, Rest in Peace and thank you.

Perhaps in her death, it would pay her the most respect to celebrate the cause she dedicated her life's work to. I found this link of a presentation Dr. Voss delivered in 2007 entitled "A Scientist in Space" and "Searching for Earth-like Planets: NASA's Kepler Mission." It can be heard here.

. What a great lady and astronaut. my condolences to her family. Remember meeting Jim Halsell between the STS-83 and STS-94 reflight and talked about what a great crew he had. He had a great crew mate in Jan Voss.

A couple of Janice stories.

Shortly after STS-83 and its re-flight, STS-94, I kidded her about whether they should count as two flights or just one. "If you have to ride two SRBs," she said, "it's a new flight."

The last time I had lunch with her was around 2001, and, since we were both SF as well as space people, were talking about the Kubrick/Clarke vision and how a lot of people felt that real life had fallen far short of it. "I don't know about that," she said. "Yes, they had a lunar base and a commercial shuttle, but we've got the shuttle, a space station, and we're exploring Mars. We're behind, but not that far."

I kind of recognized the name, but not until Michael told his story as I remember reading that blurb in the acknowledgements for one of his books. I wish I got to meet her since I would loved to have asked her questions about the science missions she flew.

Considering her Purdue background, I would say she should be just as famous as the guys like Armstrong and Cernan. Maybe she didn't go to the moon, but she certainly helped to push the curtain back on science discoveries in space.
