A quick note to alert cSers that we have just republished an essay by the late Dr. Allen O. Gamble. It is his first-person account of his role in the 1959 Project Mercury selection process.

The paper was posted online for a while, and the Carpenters cited it in "For Spacious Skies," but it disappeared in 2004 or 2005. So I'm pleased to be able to offer it again for those of you interested in these fascinating first-person stories.

You should be able to download a .pdf version, as it's rather long.

Bob Voas complemented the Gamble account by recalling their joint horror (both Navy men neck deep in Navy records in the wee hours of the morning) that their call for all Navy service jackets had produced not a single Marine Corps candidate.

A quick call fixed that: 24 Marine Corps service jackets were on their desk within hours, John Glenn's among them.

That's excellent news, Kris. You pointed me to Dr. Gamble's excellent essay a few years back when I was researching the Mercury astronaut selection process for the chapter of "Into That Silent Sea" about your father and John Glenn. For me, it was the definitive document on the entire process; easy to read, very informative and interesting, and I was devastated when I tried to look it up again some months back and could not locate it (I should have printed out a copy in the first place, I guess). So that is indeed great news.

I've been looking for this essay for ages, so thank you very much for re-posting it, Ms Stoever. (By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed For Spacious Skies, which was heartbreaking in the best way.)
