Hello all, next week Neil Armstrong will visit Israel as a guest of an investment bank. I might get a chance to meet him and would like your advice as to the do's and don'ts (such as no autographs). There are some questions I would like to ask him (mainly: would you trade your "ticket" with Eugene A. Cernan? how should the tragic losses of the Apollo 1, Challenger and the Columbia affect space research? and the "basic" Q&A) I also hope to give him a card with a translation of some notes Col. Ilan Ramon wrote about meeting him while in training for the STS-107. I would really like to hear your opinions about what i wrote here, AND should any of you have any connection to his entourage for his visit to Israel - I would really like to have the chance to give him our humble gift. Ask him about his test pilot experiences on the x-15 etc. He's much more talkative about those understated achievements. He also still flies a glider.Paul |

Definitely ask him about his X-15 days, also ask him about his first plane ride, I believe it was in a Ford Tri-Motor, but may be mistaken |

You may want to ask him what were his most vivid memories of both Apollo 11 and Gemini 8.Also, if he remembers what his first thoughts were when Deke Slayton told him (Collins amd Aldrin), that they were selected for the first Moon landing. Thanks. |

Let me offer my input, and then allow others their views if I am on or off target. - He is a nice guy, a quiet guy, somewhat reserved.
- Don't overdo the adulation (sp?) on him. He does not take to false emotion, people kissing his butt, etc. He sees himself as a regular type of fellow. He really believes (IMHO) that many in the astronant corps cold have done the moon landing, and that fate rather found him out. He did the job he was assigned to do and happy that it worked out. He is happy that others are happy, but does not get caught up in it himself.
- Stay away from family questions.
- I would recommend not brining up the Apollo 1 fire as you would other things to get into. He was close to White.
- He sees himself has having done many things in his life, and the moon landing was only one part of that, and many years ago. If you can get onto what he is doing lately, that might be good.
- I dont think he likes talking about Gemini 8 that much. He knew that Scott worked hard for the EVA and it did not happen. He felt bad about that.
- The recommendation to discuss his X15 experiences I think is very good. That alone, would have been a career highlight for many pilots and it is overshadowed by his astronaut career.
- He is a classic introvert IMHO. Not a outgoing guy like a Conrad or a Schirra would have been.
- He is very Midwestern/Ohio in his demeanor. Polite, considerate of others, respects the privacy of others, would expect the same back.
- He does not impress me as being overly "chummy" with his Apollo 11 crewmates. Nothing bad mind you, he might think that others have this belief that there are close as "brothers". I don't think so, they got on OK for the job, no hard feelings ever, its just that they are not that close.
- A Pete Conrad story might light him up a bit.
- I think he was close to Elliott See, so if so, careful there.
Enjoy your meeting!! Lets us know how it goes. Again, the above is my best advice, which could have my own human faults included in my counsel. Others may have other views. Your decision, of course, on how to proceed.Good luck, and thanks to you for the work that you do. |

Sadly, it appears I have to admit defeat. I tried pulling all my connections and eventually got another good friend (a news reporter) in - but I probably won't be admitted. I will however send what you wrote here to some others who will be meeting him, so that hopefully they can benefit.I really wanted to meet Jack Schmitt any way... |

Do you know what type of glider Neil flies? There's a photo of him in the three volume edition of A Man On The Moon that shows him in what looks like a Schweitzer 1-26. Just curious... |

When "60 Minutes" did the piece on him and it featured footage of him in the sailplane, I remember it looked a lot like either an ASK-21 or a Grob G103. It got my attention because it looked a lot like the ones I've flown in! jodie

Yes Jodie, that's right. I have a copy of the 60mins slot somewhere and I'll check it out, but it's a glass 2-seater. When I asked him he said "I borrow a sailplane from time to time". I corresponded with someone recently who believed they'd had an aerotow-retrieve from Neil when flying near Barron Hilton's ranch. How cool would THAT be!Paul |

From the Associated Press: First man on moon meets with children during visit to Israel quote: Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, answered questions from Israeli children Tuesday in his first visit to Israel, showing animation and energy in discussing the feelings and justification for space travel.Armstrong was invited by a local investment company to lecture on the subject of motivation. In the morning, he visited the Space and Technology Museum in Haifa, where he talked to a group of children, museum spokeswoman Ahuva Kfir said.
