I'm going through my stack of photocopies from some Project Mercury files at the NASA hq history office, and simply had to share this precious anecdote reported in WaPo, via the UPI, on 8-11-1962:"One astronaut's wife told a story on another today. . . ." Addressing the National Council of Women, Rene Carpenter described an early briefing by a navy admiral concerning NASA's recovery operations: "He said that if the parachute failed to work and the capsule hit the water with such force it would split a seam and sink, a detonator would go off automatically and set off a signal device that would alert the recovery forces. "Jo Schirra spoke up and said, 'Oh, so they'll know where to drop the wreath?'" [Edited by KC Stoever (January 17, 2007).] |
