Originally Greg Jarvis was assigned to the STS-51D mission along with Dan Brandensteins crew and Charlie Walker.
When 51-E was cancelled, Bobkos crew took the 51-D slot and acquired Walker, and Jake Garn as a replacement for Jarvis.
My question is, why didn't Jarvis remain with Brandensteins crew and fly on 51-G with Baudry?
Was he bumped by Al-Saud?

Jarvis was bumped by Al-Saud due to Arabsat satellite being deployed on the mission. Back in 1985, sponsors of payloads being deployed on the Shuttle could send an observer on the Shuttle.

Jarvis was working for Hughes, and thus would fly on when a Hughes satellite was being deployed (or at least manifested to be deployed - payloads changed as much as payload specialists!)

I remember a statement in "I Touch The Future" that really touched me: Jarvis, though he would be doing fluid dynamics experiments on 51L, was on that flight because it was "owed" to him (there was no Hughes satellite on 51L, and thus he had no real reason to be on that flight), after having been bumped from three of four missions starting with Brandenstein's 51D.

That's like the airplane ride where Buddy Holly took Waylon Jennings' seat.

Before Jarvis was assigned to 51L, he was tentatively assigned to the mission before Mission-61C when the Syncom-4/F-5 satellite was originally manifested on 61C. When the satellite was removed from the 61C manifest, Jarvis was assigned to 51L.

I have also read that Jarvis and Walker were also assigned to STS 51-I but when the Lesat repair was added to the fight it was thought that it was to dangerous to have PS's on the flight. I do not know if this is true. Anyone have any more on this?

It could be that the Leasat repair hardware precluded having payload specialists on the flight due to weight.
