One of those guys was quoted as saying that the Earth looked like a bowl of Granola from the Moon because everybody here was a fruit, nut or flake.

I know this is an old gag - now. But it was pretty fashion-forward in the Apollo era.

Some of those birds were known for humor - Wally Schirra, Pete Conrad and Jim Lovell - but it wasn't any of them.

John, if this post is not in jest, I think you are mistaken that any astronaut ever said this (at least, not originally). The joke was coined to describe California...
