Astronaut Michael Collins who flew on Gemini 10 (and performed an EVA to retrieve an experiment package from an Agena Upper Stage that Gemini 8 had previously docked with), was born 75 years ago today, October 31, 2005, in Rome, Italy. He also flew on an Apollo mission (I just can't quite seem to remember which one). Happy bithday Gen. Collins and may you have many more! |

Not only is it Mike Collins' birthday, but this means that all three members of the Apollo 11 crew are now 75 years old. Anyone else feel like time is just racing away?Anyway, Happy Birthday, Mike - with that many candles on your birthday cake you really are Carrying the Fire! |

Here's a question for all you high school teachers out there - could Mike Collins run for President? My understanding is his father was an attaché on official military at the time, in Rome. |

Best birthday wishes to an accomplished aviator, skilled writer, and aspiring artist -- a true Renaissance man. While he is best known for his Gemini and Apollo flights, Mike, as Founding Director of the National Air and Space Museum, did more than almost anyone to help educate the public about space. |

Happy Boo-thday, Mr. Collins! After meeting this man and seeing just how young at heart he still is, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that he went trick-or-treating tonight! |

Time Magazine's Jeffrey Kluger paid tribute to Michael Collins on the ocassion of his 85th birthday today. If an uninteresting word ever passed Michael Collins' lips, no one was ever around to hear it. That's saying something because Collins, who turns 85 on October 31, was a NASA astronaut—part of the third group of spacemen selected for the program, in 1963 — and astronauts were not known for their lyricism. Not so in the case of Collins, who, to most space historians' minds, was the poet laureate of the astronaut class — and has, in the half century since, never lost that title to anyone else. |
