Does anyone (maybe Sy??) know the name/ age at the time/ any other info, on the person who gave the "go" after the LEM alarms on the Apollo 11 descent to the moon? Reason being, on tours that I give of the NASM, I like to also give that info, so visitors realize that it took alot more people than just the astronauts to land on the moon. Many thanks! |

The 26 year old Guidance Officer's name calling out the "go" was Steve Bales. He received the Medal of Freedom for his work that day. There would also have been some backroom people he'd have been talking to at the time. The one name I saw listed was Jack Garman.

Here's a excerpt from my book re this subject: "As a specialist in the CSM, the EECOM had little to do during the descent phase of the mission; the main players were the Lunar Module Systems Flight Controllers and the Trench, namely FIDO Jay Greene, RETRO Chuck Deiterich, GUIDO Steve Bales, LM CONTROL Bob Carlton, and LM TELCOM Don Puddy. As a member of the Ascent Team, I was a by-stander as the drama was played out. It was impossible to stay calm as Bob Carlton called out the rapidly decreasing fuel supply, and the momentary confusion caused by the LM computer alarms that put the onus squarely on GUIDO Steve Bales. Fortunately, Steve had Jack Garman, one of the most able computer experts in his back room cuing him, enabling Bales to shout his dramatic “Go!” and thereby become an Apollo 11 legend. At times, our back room gurus would make us MOCR guys look awfully good." Sy Liebergot "Apollo EECOM: Journey Of A Lifetime" www.apolloeecom.com
