The Mystery of Mars (fully revised and updated edition)Talk and book signing by Sally Ride First American Woman in Space October 21, 2006 In The Mystery of Mars, pioneering astronaut Sally Ride and noted science writer Tam O'Shaughnessy draw on results from the most recent missions to Mars to present a comprehensive overview of Earth's nearest planetary neighbor. With its thin atmosphere, rocky canyons, extinct volcanoes, and icy polar regions, Mars has many things in common with Earth. There exists the possibility that life may have begun there. Comparing the two planets' evolution, geology, and geography, the authors explain what we know about Mars today - and what we hope to learn about Mars in the future, including whether primitive life does exist somewhere beneath its barren surface. With lavish color photographs, this engaging and accessible introduction to the Red Planet is the ideal guide to this new age of Mars research. The Mystery of Mars is an engaging and accessible introduction to the Red Planet, and the ideal guide to the coming age of Mars exploration. This fully revised and expanded edition brings the reader up to date with the very latest findings. Sally Ride became the first American woman in space in 1983 when she made a six-day flight aboard the space shuttle Challenger. She made her second flight into space in 1984. She is the founder of Sally Ride Science ( www.sallyridescience.com ), a company that creates innovative programs and publications for young people interested in science. Sally Ride will also be signing copies of two other space books: Voyager: An Adventure to the Edge of the Solar System and The Third Planet: Exploring the Earth from Space Brief personalizations on books will be possible. There is no limit to the number of books people can purchase for signing (store supplies permitting), however the signing is limited to the three books for sale, and only books sold on the day. The event is free with paid science center admission. For more information on ticketing for the talk, please see: http://www.rhfleet.org/site/education/weekendtalk.html [Edited by FFrench (October 06, 2006).] |

I may live in Australia, but I've had the occasion to attend and even be involved in several astronaut signings/talks at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego. These are always handled with consummate care and professionalism, and it is a great chance to not only ask questions of well-known astronauts such as Sally Ride at the talks, but to also have them sign your books in an orderly and well controlled manner which gives you the chance for a quick chat and sometimes a nice photo opportunity.I can't be there for this event, but I sure wish I could! A (nicely) long brand new interview with Sally Ride can be watched from this website: http://www.kpbs.org/tv/programs/full_focus?id=6200 - talking about the latest discoveries on Mars, including footage from the IMAX "Roving Mars" movie...and her new Mars book too. |

Although I haven't listened to it myself, someone over at Astroaddies mentioned that while Sally was her usual interesting self in this interview, the interviewee seemed to have no real idea about the sort of questions to ask America's first woman in space. Best wishes to the organisers of this event at the Fleet, and hopefully Francis might post a few words about the Sally Ride talk and signing to let us know how it went. |

The Fleet Science Center have just told me that the advanced book orders (via the web, info listed above) will close at 12 Midnight PST tonight. Last chance to order personalized signed books via the web. (Hopefully, there will still be signed books available from the Fleet post-event, but they will not be personalized, and they may of course sell out on Saturday). Thanks, FF |

A big thank you to everyone who attended the Sally Ride talk and signing at the Fleet on Saturday and bought signed books, as well as many of you who ordered via our website. We received some very positive feedback about the day, and we’re glad you all had such a good time. We look forward to hosting more astronauts for book signings. We do still have signed copies of the three Sally Ride books available through our store, either for purchase at the Science Center in person or via our website: http://www.rhfleet.org/store.html where you can also still find signed copies of Nancy Conrad’s “Rocketman” (with special Pete Conrad embossing) and William Hartmann’s “The Grand Tour.” Thanks so much again!!
